Rated R (i) is a suite of silk-screen prints by artist Robert Lazzarini. Based on the Motion Picture Association's rating system for movies in the United States, the rating R signifies viewer restriction and mature content. Each print is unique and worked with a varying degree of mark-making which the artist refers to as the language of bodily injury; nicks, scrapes, cuts, and abrasions. America’s violent past is continually being revisited in our violent present. The fact that Americans are obsessed with it as entertainment says as much about the commodification of violence as it does about the ever-increasing blur between violence in reality and fictional violence. The prevalence of violence across all media adds to this confusion. Rated R (i) focuses on America’s dark fascination with the pain and suffering of others and its role as a source of pleasure.
